Cranky

What do you do when you’re feeling cranky?

Woke up at the wrong side of the bed yesterday and my foul mood tailed me like a shadow wherever I went. Slept around 1130pm the day before yesterday but was awaken at 1230am with no apparent reason. Woke up too early for my own good. Tried to drift back into sleep. After 3 hours of toss and turn, dreamland finally welcomed me into her bosom.

*Cranky Sushi anyone?*

I’m very sensitive when I’m cranky. Usually, I can take all sort verbal bombardments in my stride but when I’m cranky, I’ll always have the urge to snap back at people. Fortunately, my head is controlled by logic and my heart by love. These are the things that kept me calm and not going around biting people’s head off :P

Seahorse City, Miri

It wasn’t my first trip to this quaint little city by the sea. At every roundabout in the city, one would come across a sculpture of seahorse. Why a seahorse? Not a derrick or an oil barrel, after all it owes its existence to oil.

According to the Chief minister of Sarawak, Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, (mak oi panjangnyer nama), who is the master mind behind the seahorse mascot, the reason he has chosen the seahorse (not a tong minyak or menara besi buruk :P) is because

the seahorse has a unique, beautiful and distinctive figure. its gentle and charming nature has often been used by the people to denote many good values in life such as caring for each other and possessing an upright character. it also symbolizes harmonious relationship and peacefulness. As it is living in the sea, it signifies Miri's close relationship with the sea coral reef and as a resort paradise. "

Betul kah Encik Legolas?

Anyway, let’s get back to my field trip. I spent 2 nights at the very nice Marriot Hotel, which is located along the Tanjung beach. Great room, great food, great service, but not so great beach. Actually there isn’t one to start with. Heck with the beach… who needs it when you have a spanking huge swimming pool :)

*Marriot Hotel, Miri

Tried to get some tan but the weather was just too kind to me. Not hot and not too cold, it’s just… nice. So instead of wasting such a beautiful day cooped up in a room watching the idiot box, I walked along the beach to do some photography. So glad that I did because I managed to take one of my best photos ever ^_^

*Beautiful Sunset at Tanjung Beach

The field trip started with a briefing by our facilitator, Simon Baker, followed by a quick introduction to the course and the geology of Borneo by our lecturer, Joe Lambiase (i still don't know how to pronounce his surname... Lum-bias, Lum-bia-see, Le-ambias :P)

3 stops for the day:

  1. Miri No.1 Well

- The famous Grand Old Lady (tak nampak old lady pun… old apek pun takde) on top of Canada Hill. Great view of the city.

*Grand Old Lady, Canada Hill

  1. Oil Saturated Sandstone

- Unfortunately, the outcrop has been removed for building houses. What’s left of the out crop is some faint smell of hydrocarbon. I wouldn’t stay there even it’s free. Oil Sand?! ermm... Fire?!

*Apa ni?

  1. Airport Road

- The rocks here are just amazing.

*Airport Road Outcrop

*Wildflower

The perfect way to end the day... A BBQ dinner by the pool followed by a relaxing soak in the bath tub :)

Signal Fire

A crude unedited story written by yours truly a few months back (inspired by the song 'Signal Fire'). I wonder whether i could finish writing it :)

___________________________________________________________________________________

“What do you mean when you said that!” screamed Lisa hysterically at Jordan.

Jordan slowly diverted his gaze from Lisa. Further away into the darkness at the corner of his room, just a little bit more, he told himself. Lisa couldn’t contain the outburst anymore, tears were running down her rosy pink cheeks, and her clear hazel eyes had become blurry.

The perfect words never crossed my mind,

'cause there was nothing in there but you,

Jordan couldn’t look away; standing in front of him was the woman he had sworn to protect and to love for the rest of his life. He’s a man of his word but he had learned, the hard way, that sometimes love just ain’t enough. Silence was his only apt reply for no words could convey how he feels. Time passed ever slowly, everything was so still, stillness that emanates coldness, bitterness, and sadness.

I felt every ounce of me screaming out,

But the sound was trapped deep in me,

Lisa took a deep breath, hoping it could at least give her some self-control, but her sobbing she had no control over. She was shattered, everything that she had believed and hold dear were shattered, never had she felt so broken. She felt so helpless and fragile. Like a rose trampled on the ground, she was crushed and she felt a part of her had withered away.

All I wanted just sped right past me,

While I was rooted fast to the earth,

I could be stuck here for a thousand years,

Without your arms to drag me out,

‘Forgive me,’ uttered Jordan in a steely somber tone. His face was lighted intermittently by passing cars on the street below his run down apartment.

There you are standing right in front of me

There you are standing right in front of me

All this fear falls away to leave me naked,

Hold me close cause I need you to guide me to safety

‘If this is what you wanted, I have nothing else to say,’ replied Lisa, still sobbing. She gathered her stuffs as she had gathered her courage and walked out of the room without looking back. The old creaky door opened and closed, Lisa had come and gone.

No I won't wait forever

No I won't wait forever

Jordan opened his mouth but nothing came out. He tried again and still nothing. Empty and hollow. His life shut down the very moment Lisa went out the door.

In the confusion and the aftermath,

You are my signal fire,

The only resolution and the only joy,

Is the faint spark of forgiveness in your eyes,

He let out an anguish cry.

There you are standing right in front of me

There you are standing right in front of me

All this fear falls away to leave me naked,

Hold me close cause I need you to guide me to safety,

Jordan finally understood the meaning of it all.

There you are standing right in front of me

There you are standing right in front of me

All this fear falls away to leave me naked,

Hold me close cause I need you to guide me to safety,

No I won't wait forever

No I won't wait forever

No I won't wait forever

Jordan sets his tired frame on the old dusty couch with his hands clasped, as if he’s offering a prayer, but a prayer to who? He is never a religious person, but at this very moment, he searches for something he could cling on to as his world is slowly falling apart. Anguish, helpless and despair; are not even close to how he feels.

The perfect words never crossed my mind,

'cause there was nothing in there but you,

Intermittent green luminescent lights lit the cold steely room. Monotonous continuous beeps echoes in unison with the lights, the vital signs of life, Lisa’s life. Looking at her, one would assume she’s sleeping because her face is emanating such peace and tranquility, but the truth is she’s stricken with brain tumor and she has been in a coma for the past 2 months.

I felt every ounce of me screaming out,

But the sound was trapped deep in me,

Jordan closes his eyes and let his mind wander, a diminutive escape from the cold harsh reality.

‘Well you can have it. I’ve read the book and it’s really good,’ replied Lisa with a glorious smile.

He can still remember vividly the very first time he met Lisa at a quaint little bookstore called Paper’s Haven on the East end of Jeremiah Street. They were looking for the same book, ‘A Wedding In November’, by Anita Shreve.

to be continued...

A Walk In The Park

Last Sunday went to Lake Gardens to do some photography with CJ, Dave, JJ (not the Singaporean singer) & Pink (not the American singer). All of them (except JJ cause his camera was with his sister) were using their superb Nikon DLSRs while i scurried around with my trusty Canon Powershot. I couldn't help it but feeling so 'undertooled'. Nevertheless, i managed to take some decent photos with it. Maybe i should start saving for a new camera...

Or start a 'Get JL a camera fund' ?

Who wanna donate for a good course? cheque & credit card also sapu :P

Enjoy!

大熊貓

*The 16 Pandas Choir group... La la la

According to wikipedia, there are only around 3000 Giant panda bears left in the world. This puts them in the endangered species category just like the Sumatran rhinoceros and Siberian tiger. These giants are tame and passive in nature but they won't hesitate to attack whenever they feel threaten or irritated.

I always have a soft spot for them because pandas are just so dem cute!

I still remember when i was just a little boy, i asked my mother what would i be...
eh eh... got carried away :P

Acherly I asked my mum :

"why the panda has 'blue black' eyes geh?"

"oh... because they like to sleep late loh... if you sleep late you will have black eye circles lika panda..."

"ohhh... i must sleep early then"

aiyah... so gullible hoh... :P

I found these old photos of the '16 pandas', which were born in captivity a few years back, in my inbox. They are just so adorable. Tak percaya ke... tengoklah sendiri :)

Little Gestures... Mean A Lot

Yesterday, while I was strolling around Taman Rimba Ampang, I saw an old couple sitting on a bench at the playground area. The grandpa was massaging grandma’s arm gently and it was a lovely sight. I walked nearer to them to take picture of them together and overheard them chatting about their grandchildren (they were conversing in Hakka). Sweet old couple :)

*ni kon... wah hau liang ohhh...*

It’s not always about the fancy dinner or gifts, but little gestures of love from our loved ones, that we will always cherish and remember.

A phone call to say ‘Hi’, holding the door for the other person, well-wishes via text messaging, a good rub on the back… These are the things that we all do to show our affection and care :)

Little gestures of love, have you shown yours today?

Beast Hunt

Sad news from our shore...

The Star newspaper :

PETALING JAYA: The lack of inoculation marks on the body of the girl stuffed inside a sports bag in Petaling Utama indicates that the child could be a foreigner.

Police are now looking into the angle that the girl and her parents could be illegal immigrants, since no one has come forward to claim the body.

Not the same: (Top) Nurin missing since Aug 20 and (bottom) the dead girl who yet to be identified.
If indeed the parents are illegal immigrants, they face a dilemma because, to reveal themselves to the authorities would result in deportation for them, and yet their statement to the police would be vital in tracking down the child’s killer.

parents... it's your child that we're talking here!

A paediatrician who declined to be named said all Malaysian babies are given the BCG vaccine after birth. The absence of the BCG scar on the dead girl could mean that her parents are illegal immigrants.

On Monday, an employee found the bag at the bottom of the staircase of a shoplot in PJS1/48 and brought it into her workplace, thinking that it belonged to her boss.

Her boss later opened the bag and found the naked body of a girl in a foetal position.

Police found bruise marks on her neck, suggesting strangulation, and a brinjal and a cucumber inserted in her private parts.

“There is no missing person report that fits the girl’s description,” said Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed yesterday.

The bag was left at the place as early as 2pm on Sunday because there was CCTV footage of a woman in jeans and a red top walking about in the area at that time and the bag could be seen then. The woman, estimated to be in her 20s, later entered a Silver Kenari.

ACP Arjunaidi appealed to the woman in the video, or people who know her, to contact the police.

In the brand new sports bag which was sent to the police forensic unit for fingerprinting, investigators found strands of hair that did not belong to the girl. The dead girl, believed to be between six and nine years old, weighed about 18kg and was about 150cm in height. There was a birthmark on her left thigh.

Police are also checking whether the murder was linked to two cases in the past three months, where two girls aged five and six were abducted and molested in the Kampung Baru area in separate incidents.

Meanwhile, police have taken blood samples for DNA tests from the parents of eight-year-old Nurin Jazlin Jazimin, who has been missing since Aug 20 in the Wangsa Maju area.

Nurin’s parents were called to view the girl’s body on Monday but they confirmed that the dead girl was not their daughter.

It was reported that Nurin was seen putting up a resistance as she was being pulled into a van near a night market in Wangsa Maju on the night she disappeared

With all these terhorrible things happening nowadays, parents must be more prudent and always keep a close watch on their children, especially when they are out in public places. Personally, i would like to see our police force adopts a more proactive role in tackling crime like this,
not when it has happened only they take action. Prevention is always better than cure.

One thought that crosses my mind is what if the victim is your own son/daughter. Would you take justice into your own hand? Seek revenge, hunt down the 'beast'. Is it justifiable to kill in this circumstance?

SICK!!!

News taken from here

"John David R. Atchison, a federal prosecutor from Florida, was held in custody Monday after he appeared in U.S. District Court in Detroit on a charge that he flew to Detroit intending to have sex with a 5-year-old girl.

Atchison, an assistant U.S. Attorney in Florida's northern district, is expected to appear again in court for a detention hearing on Tuesday.

He was caught in an Internet child sex sting run by the Macomb County Sheriff's Department and the FBI and arrested Sunday when he flew into Detroit Metropolitan Airport from Pensacola, Fla.

Atchison is charged with using interstate communication to entice a minor to have sexual contact, a federal charge that carries a 10-year minimum prison sentence upon conviction. He is also charged with traveling across state lines with the intent of engaging in illicit sexual contact, an offense that carries a maximum sentence of 30 years.

A sheriff's deputy posed as a mother who was interested in finding someone to have sex with her children, in a sting that has already netted a California paramedic and numerous other alleged pedophiles from around the country.

According to the complaint, Atchison reassured the sheriff's deputy who was posing as the child's mother that he would not hurt the 5-year-old because he goes "slow and easy," and "I've done it plenty." O_O'

News of Atchison's arrest is "a shellshock" in Gulf Breeze, where Atchison was the president of a local youth recreation board and had been involved in coaching soccer, baseball and other sports.

Atchison is married with children and has lived in the community about 20 years.

Officials at the U.S. Attorney's Office in Tallahassee, where the northern district of Florida is headquartered, and in Pensacola, where Atchison works, could not immediately be reached for comment.

At his own request, John David Roy Atchison, the indicted federal prosecutor from Pensacola, FL, was taken off of suicide watch.

Atchison waived his detention hearing and stood mute to multiple charges. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.

The assistant U.S. attorney has been charged with enticement of a minor using the Internet and knowingly traveling interstate to engage in illicit sex. If convicted of those charges, he could spend up to 60 years in prison.

Today, another count—traveling across state lines to have sex with someone under 12—was added. That one carries a maximum of life in prison upon conviction.

Atchison was arrested Sunday in metro Detroit after several online chats with an undercover officer posing as a mother interested in offering her children for sex. He intended on having sex with her fictitious 5-year-old daughter, police said.

Atchison even had a MySpace.com page, which said he enjoyed spoiling young girls.

Under the user name fldaddy04, name John and caption "Experienced, understanding Daddy," Atchison allegedly described himself in his MySpace profile as: “Handsome, educated, professional, experienced Daddy. I love younger girls. Like everything about you...how you think, talk, act. I'm very understanding and supportive...never ever judgmental.”

The profile goes on to say that he would like to “pamper, spoil, change and take care of” girls.

His general interests are listed as “surfing, diving, boating...everything to do with the water...music and cute girls."

These people make me sick!!! They are not even fit to be called a human being!

And what the hell is wrong with those people who offer up their children for money. Shame on you!

Kena Saman

Not talking about the 'summon' that comes in red envelope here.

I was issued my first summon yesterday.

Woo Hoo! Eh… shouldn’t I be sad :P

Anyway, it all happened at the toll booth of Sg. Buloh yesterday. While waiting for my turn, I quickly made a call to my mom. It was a very short chat, maybe less than a minute and the traffic was still idling after the call. When it was my turn, I took the ticket and whizzed off leisurely. Less than a 100m away, I could see two police men issuing summon to some lorry drivers, when all of a sudden, one of them looked at my direction and signaled me to pull over. Just like every ‘law-obeying’ citizen, I pulled my car aside and rolled down my window.

*taken from Mohd Fahmi

JL: Selamat petang Encik

Police: Selamat petang, boleh minta lesen dan saya akan beritahu kesalahan Encik

(kesalahan? What did I do eh?)

*handed the policeman my driving license*

JL: OK...

-__-*

*scribbled on his pad and then handed me the summon with the sweetest smile*

Police: Encik boleh bayar saman anda di PJ dalam tempoh masa 2 bulan

JL: Terima Kasih

Police: Terima Kasih

Now, if only there’re that efficient in solving crimes and catching thieves…

*sigh…*
